For those looking towards beauty school, or hair school, the jobs outlook just got brighter. This year, US News & World Report added hairdressers to their list of The 100 Best Jobs of 2014.
Additionally, according to the report, hairdresser rose from number 14 to number 11 on this year’s list of Social Services jobs. This is due to the fact that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 77,600 new positions will be created over the next ten years.
Why cosmetology? Why not? Obviously the market is growing, which makes cosmetology a wonderful profession to get into. But also, as a hairdresser you get to do what you have always secretly dreamed of doing: advising your peers on their appearance and getting paid to do so!
One of the biggest benefits, though, is that as a hairdresser, you typically get to set your own hours and be your own boss. This profession gives you complete flexibility. Work for yourself or for a salon, set hours that are convenient for you, or work by appointment only.
Hairdressing is perfect for everyone, of both sexes. Some people decide to become hairdressers simply because they love working with hair. Maybe this is you. Perhaps as a child you braided your dolls’ hair, or your sister’s. Maybe you have a family member who was a hairdresser and you thought it looked like fun. Or maybe you have just recently noted that you have a knack for hairstyles and think that this could be the career path for you.
Pros of Cosmetology
Other benefits of this profession include that fact that it offers a great amount of stability. If you are good at what you do, you will most likely always be able to find work, whether you decide to work for yourself and rent space somewhere, or go to work in a salon.
Being a hair stylist is also a wonderful outlet for creativity! Hairdressing is an art form, truly. It is a wonderful way to express yourself, and is perfect for anyone who is artistic or creative.
If you enjoy making others happy, and making them look good, hairdressing is a way that you can contribute just a little to others. Making someone feel beautiful, and happy, is a great way to spend your days!
And, if you are really great at your work, hairdressing can be a way to get noticed. You could become an expert on the trends; on style and beauty, and really make a name for yourself. Who knows? Perhaps you will work for magazines or even film or television, as a hairstylist to the stars.
Every day you will get to meet new people. Every day will different, as everyone’s hairstyle choices are different. Each client will be both challenging and rewarding. And depending upon what services you decide to offer, every day could vary. Some days you may do men’s haircuts, some days women’s, some days facials or manicures. One great thing about hairdressing is that it gives you so many outlets to expand your business, and so many new ways to increase your income!
Which leads us to yet another benefit: Salary. The sky is the limit on your income. You can choose to get certified in extra services, you can choose your own prices, and of course, gratuities are often provided by your clients.
